From Laboratory Development to Mass Production: The Journey of an IVD Product
Turning an idea into a finished in vitro diagnostic product requires much more than developing a working test. A successful IVD product must move through several stages before it can enter stable commercial production.
The process usually begins with product concept and technical development. At this stage, researchers evaluate the detection principle, materials, reagents, product structure, and intended application. Laboratory testing helps determine whether the initial design can achieve the required performance.

Once a preliminary design is established, engineers and technical teams begin optimizing the product. Parameters such as reagent formulation, material combinations, assembly methods, and testing procedures may need to be adjusted to improve consistency and manufacturing efficiency.
The next challenge is transferring laboratory development into a controlled production process. A product that performs well in a laboratory still needs to be suitable for repeatable large-scale manufacturing. Production parameters must therefore be standardized, documented, monitored, and continuously improved.

Sample evaluation is another important stage. Before mass production, manufacturers can use pilot production and sample testing to identify potential process issues and confirm that the product meets established specifications.
After the product and manufacturing process are finalized, production can move toward larger-scale manufacturing. Quality control continues throughout this stage, with attention to materials, equipment, processes, packaging, and finished products.

At MEIBAO, R&D, technical development, production, and quality management work together to support the transition from product concept to commercial manufacturing.
This complete development process allows an IVD manufacturer to consider not only how a product works, but also how it can be produced consistently and efficiently at scale.
Behind every finished diagnostic product is a carefully managed journey from development to production.
